Tests aren’t foolproof. They are devised to be dependable, of course, but they are imperfect.

Consequently, people (even with symptoms) who are told they’re negative for a disease may risk infecting family and friends because they didn’t consider their results could be false.

However, what about the opposite situation?

Consider people whose tests say they’re infected, but falsely.

False positives, according to health officials in an August 2020 report from Harvard Medical School , likely occur in no more than five percent of COVID testing cases (approximately 1 in 20).

I had never thought about this possibility. If I had, I might have thought a false positive harmless.

If a person without coronavirus is said to have it, that person will present as an asymptomatic carrier and isolate  for a few weeks. Life will go on.

What I didn’t consider – until I experienced it – was the psychological fallout.

Just a few weeks before my birthday in July, I had some health issues. I experienced a loss of taste and smell (not unusual during ragweed season). I experienced fatigue (but in a pollen-heavy heat wave, random exhaustion was explainable). Yet, out of a sense of concern, I endured the dreaded viral swab up the nose to determine whether my issues were symptoms of the coronavirus and not allergies. My boyfriend took the same test at the same time.

No results had come back by my birthday’s arrival, but I’d been feeling better and was confident I’d hear good news. I visited my family for cake and presents, then I hosted a weekend party at my house with an irresponsible number of attendants. The following Monday I received a phone call that made my gut turn.

“Your test result is positive.”

Positive.

What a strange evolution that word had undergone. Once, it meant beneficial or good; now it meant terror. I had placed my parents, my siblings and my closest friends in danger.

I faced two options: own up or keep mum. If I informed everyone, they’d know I’d put them at risk without warning. But if I chose not to do this? Perhaps none of them would contract the illness. If they did, they wouldn’t have been able to trace it back to me.

I confessed, knowing that it would cause me scandal, ridicule and shame.

Phone calls, texts… I sent out messages of warning and apology. In return, I received exclamations of fear and hatred. I was told that I’d behaved like an irresponsible brat. I was told that it would be my fault if they or any of their loved ones died. Of everyone, none were so angry as my family members – my sister told me never to speak to her again. I was emotionally wrecked. I understood that my choices had been reckless and wrong, and there could be no taking it all back.

I cried a lot, having learned that some mistakes can’t be undone.

A few days later, my boyfriend’s test came back negative. I was relieved but confused. Our results were different? We lived together, slept together, shared every meal and drank after one another.

I rushed out to take another COVID test – this time a far less invasive (though still uncomfortable) throat swab. I called to check on the results every day for weeks. I stayed in contact with my workplace which had to be temporarily shut down for employee testing all because of me.

Person after person began to update me on their individual results: all negatives.

Finally, I received the same news.

I thought family and friends would share my elation, but some expressed anger that I’d gotten retested. The cause for outrage and fear was owed to a broken trust, and not just my results.

I am thankful that none in my circle contracted COVID-19, but my empathy for those with positive test results has greatly expanded. No one contracts the virus maliciously. They do not spread it as a form of personal attack. They’re likely very scared too.

No one is perfect. We must all be personally responsible, accountable and safe. A false positive meant I got a second chance at safety, but not everyone will be as fortunate as I was.

Wear your masks.

Avoid large gatherings.

Wash your hands.

If you’re feeling bad, get tested and quarantine yourself until you know the results, and even then listen to your body. If you still feel sick, separate yourself.

I promise that you don’t want to share my experience. I didn’t have COVID, but the loss of trust from those I love most was just as unsettling.

Arts Center of Cannon County Brings Together a Community - On and Off Stage

Story by: Darby McCarthy (February 5, 2020)

It is Friday night, at 7:25pm. The Arts Center of Cannon County is abuzz with conversation and excitement. In the lobby, a wait list is growing for the chance to see a show that has already sold out (and will go on to sell out every performance). In the dressing room, people who look like they've been transported directly off the Slavic dirt roads of 1905 talk to one another in American English. From the hall comes a knock on the dressing room door and a call: "Five 'til places!"

"Thank you five!" respond the inhabitants of the dressing room. They are nervous. They are excited. They know what this interaction means: in five minutes, the fruits of three months of work will manifest. Fiddler on the Roof is about to start.

This scene is unique in its specific details, but is not a generally uncommon occurrence for the artistic community in and around the Murfreesboro and Woodbury areas of Tennessee. Patrons of the theatre have long come to expect passionate displays of anger, romance, and joy via song, dance, and spoken word delivery from those who value the thrill of performance. For some, this is an experience as unifying and enthralling as any major sporting event. The actors and musicians are not paid for their work monetarily. The compensation is shared experience - and it is well worth it.

Community theatre gathers together individual occupants of an area and introduces them to one another when they might not otherwise have ever met. One cast member works in the restaurant business in Nashville, another does bookkeeping in Murfreesboro, and yet another teaches in an elementary school in Woodbury. There is no age limit - from babies to great great grandfathers - all who are interested in entertaining are invited to join in the effort to provide a service to their community. And indeed, it is a service: providing art with all the vim and vigor of a professionally paid cast at a ticket price lower than the cost to fill up a tank of gas.

Those on the stage are not the only ones working hard. Behind the scenes, stage managers, prop masters, and stage hands scurry about to ensure actors are in the right places and have all of the props they need for their scenes to succeed. In the light and sound booth, the cast entrusts the immeasurably important task of cueing scene changes and important sounds, including the music to which the actors sing along. From her seat in the back of the audience, the director watches her vision for the show come to life. She hears the audience's uproarious laughter and teary-eyed sniffling at each moment she'd hoped would move them. Everything has come together.

When the show is over, the people who have come together to live their characters' lives will help "strike set" (take down the structures they'd previously built and painted to represent the setting of the play or musical), and go their separate ways, back to their lives as usual at the places each calls home. However, the value these cast members have taken away is permanent. They have all made new friends, business connections, and memories. They have shared and taught one another games, skincare tips, recipes, relationship advice - so much more than just theatrical knowledge.

"I hope we do another show together again soon!" say the cast members. "I'll come see you the next time you're in something." "It was an honor to work with you." "It's been a privilege to get to know you."

Reporting on Life in a Quarantine Era

Story by: Darby McCarthy (April 30, 2020)

Transcript of Video:

Darby: “Today is April 20, 2020, and I am still in quarantine, though I’ve lost track of the days.”

Narration: Darby McCarthy, and her boyfriend Benjamin Wichern, share a rental house with their dog on the Northeast side of Murfreesboro, TN. Life as they’d known it suddenly shifted gears in March of 2020, when came the announcement of the first global pandemic in over a century, the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the disease known as COVID-19.

Ben: “Getting to spend time at home, uh, with someone you love is… not so bad a thing.”

Narration: Benjamin Wichern is twenty-nine years old and has resided in the Middle Tennessee rental house for a little more than a year, now.

(Off-camera) Darby: “And you live with how many people”

Ben: “Uh, two.”

(Off-camera) Darby: “Two.”

Ben: “Yes. Darby, and Lana, uh, is our other roommate.”

(Off-camera) Darby: “Who’s Lana?”

Ben: “Uh, she is our dog.” >laughs<

Narration: Since the outbreak of disease, a day in the life of these Murfreesboro residents is a bit different than what it once was.

Darby: “Most people have been given enough time to pursue new hobbies and activities that they have time for, and yet I’m fighting to fit in all of the activities I’m interested in, while I’m going to work. This last week I worked 64 hours, and today is my first day off in over 7 days.”

Narration: The two have developed quarantine hobbies in their spare time, such as tending the succulents that live in pots on the kitchen windowsill or honing specific skills.

Ben: “I have been playing a lot more piano, I have been cooking more, um, and, uh, when there’s time in between: uh, video games.”

Darby: “I’ll play Dance, Dance Revolution when I have the time. It gets me a little bit of exercise, keeps me moving, but frankly, the psychological impact of losing my gym time has really been felt. When I can find time, I take Lana for walks.”

Narration: No one is happier about these walks than Lana herself, who will run around until she has worked all of her energy off."

Darby>laughing< “I think she’s proud of herself.”

Ben: “My favorite thing about quarantine has been saving money. Um, not going out as much, so there’s no uh, none of the gas cost, um, not eating out as much, so, you know, all those restaurant expenses aren’t… aren’t there, …I do feel for those people in that industry."

Narration: Darby, a worker in the food service industry, has a less positive outlook, but the balance her partner provides is a refreshing dose of positivity.

Ben: “I’m hopeful that um, by about the fall of this year that we’ll get to see, you know, at least some, some… semblance of, uh, life as we preferred it.”
